CR-X
Creative Reference Monitors
Previous generation CR speakers with rings that allowed customization.

The original CR line established a strong foundation for Mackie’s entry-level studio monitors. With this refresh, the goal was not to reinvent the product, but to evolve it thoughtfully.
I brought in an external design partner to introduce fresh perspective while maintaining continuity with the existing platform. A primary focus of the refresh was increasing CMF flexibility. Limited editions of the original CR speakers were well received, but the platform itself limited how far finishes and materials could vary. This update was an opportunity to design in greater adaptability from the start.

Concept 5, “Asheville,” was selected for refinement and developed into the final surface model. From there, the design moved into mechanical development, where internal architecture and external form were resolved together to balance cost, manufacturability, and acoustic performance.
The updated CR-X line retained the recognizable identity of the original speakers while introducing cleaner surfacing and a platform better suited for future CMF variation. The result was a more flexible foundation for limited editions and coordinated product releases across the portfolio.

The CR-X refresh builds on an established platform while creating room for growth. By refining the form and expanding CMF flexibility, the design supports both brand continuity and future collaboration opportunities. It strengthens the product’s position in the market without losing the identity that made the original line successful.

The expanded CMF flexibility also created opportunities to explore limited editions beyond our traditional market, including concepts aimed at the gaming space.
